ESE 2020 And Last 10 Years Final Cutoff Marks – Engineering Services Exam (IES)

In this article we are sharing the Cut Off Marks for Engineering Services Exam (ESE) also known by IES. IES Exam is conducted by UPSC for Graduate Engineers.

If you are preparing for Engineering Services Exam then must read the full post to know about the previous year trends of ESE exam and IES Cutoff. To get an estimate of the competition, go through the following statistics of the previous years’ cutoff.

How IES/ESE Cut Offs Are Decided By UPSC for Prelims, Mains, and Personality Test

  • IES cut off for qualifying preliminary exam will be 15% of the total marks i.e. 75 out of 500 for general and reserved category, while 10% of total marks for PH category candidates.
  • Based on the cut off score for IES preliminary exam, UPSC shortlists candidates 6-7 times the total number of vacancies for IES mains examination.
  • Candidates who appear for the mains exam will have to secure at least 20% of the marks for general, OBC, SC and ST category, whereas PH candidates will have to obtain 10%.
  • UPSC will shortlist candidates twice the number of vacancies for the final stage i.e. personality test/interview.
  • The IES cutoff that will be released by the commission will be prepared on the basis of marks secured by last qualified candidate in the given stage following the selection criteria decided by the commission.

ESE Cutoff Tie-Principles

Wherever two or more candidates have secured equal aggregate marks in ESE, 2019, the tie(s) have been resolved in
accordance with the principles approved by the Commission, viz.
(i) The candidates with more marks in the total of three Engineering papers may be ranked higher;
(ii) In case the total marks of three Engineering papers are also equal, the candidates with more marks in the Personality Test
may be ranked higher;
(iii) In case the marks in the Personality Test are also equal, the candidate who is senior in age may be ranked higher.

What Factor Affect IES Cut off

There are several factors that determine the cutoff such as:

  • Number of candidates appearing for the exam
  • Number of seats available
  • Previous year cut off
  • Marking scheme of the examination
  • Level of difficulty of the examination
